The Culture Vault KC is committed to preserving, celebrating, and elevating the history, culture, creativity, and lived experiences of Black Kansas City with accuracy, respect, transparency, and care.
As an emerging Urban Arts & Trap Museum and cultural archive, we recognize that preserving history carries a responsibility to the people whose stories we tell, the families connected to those stories, and the generations who will encounter them in the future.
Our research and documentation practices are designed to ensure that the stories preserved by The Culture Vault KC are approached thoughtfully and responsibly.
Our Research Process
Biographical profiles, historical features, educational content, and archival projects developed by The Culture Vault KC may be researched using a combination of:
Primary and archival documents
Government and court records
Newspapers and historical publications
Libraries, museums, universities, and recognized archival institutions
Books and scholarly research
Reputable journalism and published interviews
Oral histories and firsthand accounts
Information provided directly by featured individuals, families, community members, and authorized representatives
Whenever possible, information is compared across multiple reliable sources before publication.
Information obtained directly from an individual, family member, or community source may be identified or documented internally as firsthand or oral-history information when independent published documentation is unavailable.
Living Individuals & Spotlight Features
When The Culture Vault KC features a living individual, our preferred practice is to involve that individual in the development of their feature whenever reasonably possible.
Featured individuals may be invited to:
Provide photographs and biographical information
Share firsthand experiences and accomplishments
Review their completed biographical profile
Request factual corrections
Add relevant information or context
Identify information they prefer not to have included
Approve photographs they personally provide for the feature
Our goal is not simply to post about people. Our goal is to document their contributions with dignity while their stories are still being written.
Family & Community Participation
When documenting deceased individuals, The Culture Vault KC may consult surviving relatives, descendants, community members, colleagues, or others with firsthand knowledge of the individual's life.
When appropriate and reasonably possible, we may seek family input before publishing a feature, particularly when families provide personal photographs, documents, memories, or information that is not part of the public historical record.
Family participation can add invaluable context to historical research. However, documented historical events may also be researched and presented using publicly available and appropriately sourced records.
Photographs, Archival Images & Historical Materials
The Culture Vault KC takes image use and attribution seriously.
Photographs or materials supplied directly by living featured individuals, families, photographers, organizations, or other rights holders will be used according to the permission provided for the project.
Historical photographs and archival materials are reviewed for available copyright, licensing, attribution, usage, and reproduction information before publication whenever reasonably possible.
The presence of an image on the internet does not automatically mean that it is free to reproduce.
When an institution, photographer, publication, archive, or other rights holder requires permission, licensing, attribution, or other conditions for reuse, The Culture Vault KC will seek to follow those requirements. Museums and archives themselves distinguish between access to an image and permission to reproduce it publicly.
When available, image credits and source information will be preserved within TCVKC's internal research records and/or displayed publicly as appropriate.
Historical Accuracy & Speculation
The Culture Vault KC distinguishes between:
Documented historical fact
Firsthand or oral-history accounts
Interpretation
Unverified claims, theories, or speculation
We will not knowingly present rumor or speculation as established historical fact.
When historical records conflict, are incomplete, or leave unanswered questions, we will make reasonable efforts to acknowledge that uncertainty rather than manufacture an answer.
If history does not give us an answer, we will not invent one.
Quotes
Quotes attributed to individuals should come from identifiable sources, such as recorded interviews, published reporting, speeches, archival materials, or information supplied directly by the individual or an appropriate firsthand source.
The Culture Vault KC does not intentionally create fictional quotations and attribute them to real people.
Corrections & Additional Information
Historical preservation is an ongoing process.
If a featured individual, family member, researcher, historian, community member, or member of the public identifies a potential factual error or has additional documentation that may strengthen a TCVKC profile, we welcome the opportunity to review that information.
Corrections will be considered based on available documentation and credible supporting evidence.
Our goal is not to protect a mistake simply because something has already been published.
Our goal is to preserve the most accurate record we reasonably can.
Legacy Biographical Archives
The Culture Vault KC is developing a Legacy Biographical Archive for individuals featured through our historical and cultural preservation work.
Depending upon the feature and materials available, an internal archive may include:
Final biographical profile
Research notes
Sources and citations
Historical records and supporting documents
Image sources and credits
Rights or usage information
Oral-history information
Individual or family contributions
Permissions and approvals when applicable
Final published Spotlight materials
Subsequent corrections or historical updates
These records help TCVKC preserve not only the finished story but also the research behind the story.
Our Commitment
The Culture Vault KC believes Black Kansas City history deserves to be researched, documented, preserved, and presented with the same seriousness afforded to history in established cultural institutions.
We are continuing to develop our archival, curatorial, research, and preservation practices as The Culture Vault KC grows.
Our standard is simple:
